With Hurricane Irene barreling up the East Coast of the United States I created this quick video which includes 6 Tips to prepare your home for the Hurricane. I live in Albany, NY and our local weather people have been very serious about the damage this Hurricane could cause which tells me everyone South of Albany, NY (which is most of you) need to take immediate action to prepare for the gale force winds and driving rain.

This video is very “Do as I say not as I do.” But that poor teaching strategy aside it doesn’t take away from the fact that should never drive while videoing something or tailgate when it’s foggy out.

Risk management does not have to include hiring a $400 a hour consultant. Most risk management strategies are basically just common sense acted upon. Risk management is taking the small steps necessary to mitigate the chances of a loss.

And like a lot things in US culture today many American families are breaking Tradition and exchanging roasted turkey for Deep-Fried Turkey. Strangely enough six beers, a tank of propane gas, and vat of hot oil can lead to a lot of bad situations.

The series, called “Manage Your Risk in a Minute”, will be approximately one minute long videos which include thoughts and ideas on keeping your family, your business, and yourself safe from risks we sometimes overlook or procrastinate on.

The only bad part about the summer road-trip is that everyone (and their mother) is also taking a road-trip. And though individually everyone is a Great Driver (wink) as a mass of thousands screaming down the New York Thruway at 75 mph, you are all Accident Machines…

When I talk to people about personal risk management 8 out of 10 responses are “Isn’t that what I buy insurance for?” NO! Insurance is NOT risk management.
