This is a rant…
…inspired by a blog post on The Sales Lion and the comments that subsequently followed:
Epic Stats Suck
I hate epic wow stats that have zero relevance to my small business. I hate reading them, I hate seeing them and most infuriatingly I hate listening to social media speakers use them as evidence as to why small businesses need to be blogging.
If any of you have ever attended a function at which I’ve spoken you will have noticed that I DO NOT quote epic Wow Stats such as:
- Facebook has over 800 Million Users
- There are 200 Million tweets a day
- LinkedIn has 131 Million Users
Who gives a shit!!!
How do any of these ridiculous and pointless stats effect my insurance agency business?
How do I leverage these stats to improve the production of my small business’s blog?
What content can I produce that will take advantage of these stats?
Oh… Wait… I can’t and there isn’t any…
I’m not the VP of Marketing for a Multinational Corporation.
I manage the web presence for an independent insurance agency in Upstate NY.
.The fact that 400 million people post to Facebook everyday doesn’t mean anything to me.
You, social media expert, are trying to Wow me with Epic Stats… It makes you feel good about your presentation… It makes you feel big and important and elite in comparison to the crowd you are speaking to.
But what you’re really doing is disengaging me from the content. You’re losing my interest and you don’t even realize.
Relevant Stats… Yes Please!
I need relevant stats…
Tell me how many people searched the keywords crucial to my business last month on Google within 50 miles of my office.
Tell me how many times the term “car insurance” was tweeted by someone in the state in New York.
Show me the participation statistics for the the LinkedIn forums within my geographic community.
Show me the conversion statistics for Landing Pages offering similar services to my own. (Premise is my favorite landing page software)
Give me stats that mean something to my business…
Stats I can leverage in my blog content…
Stats I can set-up sales pages around…
Stats I can create content campaigns to address…
Stats that will help me drive more traffic to my website and will allow me to CASH BIGGER CHECKS!
Blog Your Business
Don’t stress yourself with epic stats that are only meant to stroke the ego of the Internet Aristocrats.
Don’t let the number 100 million enter your mind. Small business blogging success is going to come from drilling into numbers and pulling out data that you can use.
Here’s a Stat that will help your business today:
10 out of 10 small business bloggers that use Google Keyword Tools to find relevant long-tail keywords and implement them within their Online content attract more web traffic.
Here’s another stat:
One… The number of small business professionals writing this blog post that no longer give a shit how many users are on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ or Pinterest…
And one last stat:
Zero… The number of potential customers that know more about your business than you do and wouldn’t benefit from learning more about what you do as a small business.
Take a minute and read this article as well… Blog For You.
Don’t waste your time with stupid epic wow statistics that have zero relevance with what your trying to do.
Find out what consumers are searching for and then go Blog Your Business around that topic.
