No, I’m not talking about your drunk uncle Earl. I’m talking about the swirling 135 mph wind storm heading up the East Coast that weather-people have personified as Earl.
If you don’t already have Flood insurance its too late to buy it now. So the only real advice I can give those that live near water and are going to be directly effected by Hurricane Earl is batten down the hatches and protect yourself as best you can.
Your homeowners insurance policy excludes Flood and does not carry Water-Backup as a standard coverage. Flood policies are completely separate from Homeowners and regulated by the Federal Government. Water-Backup coverage must be endorsed to the homeowners policy. If you don’t have the Water-backup endorsement call you agent right now.
Knowing The Difference
In very simple terms think:
Water from above – Covered Special Form Homeowners
Water from below through pipes and drains – Water-Backup Endorsement
Water over foundation – Flood Insurance
Be Safe
Be prepared and be safe when it comes to handling this storm. Its not going to be anything like Katrina (thank goodness) but Earl is still going to cause damage. Hurricane Earl has already caused between $50 and $150 million in damage to the Caribbean.
