14 Business Insurance Coverages I Discuss With Every Client

I’m not a cookie cutter type of guy.  I don’t believe in one-size fits all.  To me “One-Size Fits All” means everyone is a little uncomfortable.  I have carried this belief into my insurance career and practice it with every client I meet.  No two businesses are the same which means that no two clients are the same which means that no two insurance programs should be the same.

However, (you knew there was going to be a twist) there are several coverages which I feel need to be addressed with every single client.  These coverages are basic to protecting every business.  Some may be combined and included in a Business Owners Package Policy or BOP.  Regardless, each should be addressed and if declined signed off upon.  By having the insurance consumer sign off that coverage has been discussed (and potentially declined) both parties are held accountable for the accuracy of the insurance program created.

The following is a list of 14 coverages that I discuss with every client I sit down with:

  1. Building and Business Property
  2. General Liability
  3. Business Income
  4. Crime
  5. Tech Liability
  6. Business Auto
  7. Workers Compensation
  8. Disability
  9. Professional Liability (Errors and Omission)
  10. Employment Practices Liability
  11. Directors and Officers
  12. Health Insurance
  13. Voluntary Benefits
  14. Employee Benefits Liability

The Rub

The are so many more insurance coverages that a Business may need.  I encourage every business owner to develop a strong relationship with your independent agent and discuss your business’s specific needs.  Use this list as the baseline for that discussion.  There is always the possibility that you will need additional protections, but addressing these coverages first will provide a solid start.

Are there any additional coverages that should be added to this list?

I know what you mean about fighting the good fight. No matter how much we scream, some people still insist on not reading their policies or knowing what is and is not covered until it is too late. It is hard to get people to realize that they are responsible for their own lives when politicians are promising that the government will take care of all their needs.

As for Twitter, I do not use it often. I work mainly with retirees and as a group they are not on Twitter. I mainly use email and Word Press.

Hi Tim, Do you use Stumble a lot? Thank you for your kind words… I try to fight the good fight. I follow you on Twitter and know you do the same!

Ryan, I keep Stumbling your blog posts and can’t find any reason to dislike what you are saying. I practice insurance in TX. My knowledge of NY insurance is limited but I know that it is not an easy state to work in. Our industry needs agents like you who understand their job is to educate customers to allow them to make an informed decision and not just manipulate them into a sale.

Its funny you say that. I’m going to CIC on Wednesday.

I find it easier to sell Tech Liability that EPLI. I don’t know why but clients seem to have a hard time wrapping their brain around EPLI risks verses the Internet.

    Thanks!!!

Just went to a CIC and they talked about Fiduciary Liability as much more important than Employee Benefit Liability.

Glad to see crime insurance on your list, a way undersold coverage.

EPLI is a must too. It amazes me the low percentage of clients who carry the coverage.

Tech liability is such a growing area. A must conversation with yoru clients.

    Great list!

    Ryan,

Great list! I agree with your approach and use a similar one. As insurance agents, we start with a standard “cookie” and than add on the extras!

    Thanks,

    Christine
