Renter Insurance vs Six-Pack of Beer

Silly title for a blog article right?  Insurance is supposed to be serious Ryan, you’re making yourself look like a clown (My inner monologue is being very difficult on me today). The truth is the title is not silly, but rather a decision that many Renters choose to make every day.  If beer is silly to you, you can make the example not so silly by substituting just about any discretionary item of equal value for the Six-Pack of beer.  However, the point remains the same, every day Renters choose to remain Un-Insured for what would be the cost of ONE SIX-PACK of Beer.

We’re not talking some fancy-smancy micro-brew, this is Coors Light territory people.

Take a baseline Renter policy:

  • $10,000 in Personal Property (clothes, couches, etc.)
  • $300,000 in Personal Liability (if you get sued)
  • $3,000 loss of use (for hotel room if something happens to apartment)

You’re looking at ~$80 for the year.  Divide $80 by 12 months and your payment is less than $7 a month.  At my local Stewart’s Shop a six-pack of Coors Light bottles (I have super expensive taste) with deposit is six dollars and change…

The Rub

All the MeatHeads reading this are like, “grunt, I Would Sooo Rather Drunk, grunt, On Beers, grunt, Then Buy a Stupid Renters Policy, grunt…”

Listen MeatHeads you need a Renter Policy so you have some protection from whatever ridiculous things you do when you are Drunk.  As far as the rest of you that don’t have Renter Policies, I hope that you see just how inexpensive this very important insurance policy can be.  I don’t usually try to sell on price but the cost of Renter Insurance makes purchasing the policy a No-Brainer.

Purchasing a Renter Policy if you Rent is a No-Brainer when just looking at the Meat and Potatoes of the Policy.  There is a lot more that could be said about the quality coverages included within a Renter Policy.  But one of the phrases that I live by is:

When you’ve struck gold, Stop digging…

So we’ll make this a quick post today. Go buy a Renter Policy.

Don’t forget about the bottle of Johnnie Walker that you keep in the car! That would be covered under your renters policy to.

Nice work putting it in perspective.

My renters policy is for slightly more than you have specified (I’ve convinced myself my baseball cards will someday gain value) and it was a complete no-brainer when I moved into my house for all of the reasons you have listed. We’re not even talking about a six-pack of beer a week, we’re talking A MONTH. Furthermore, one of my biggest fears would be someone breaking in and stealing my precious Johnnie Walker Black, so the $12 I’m paying a month is well worth the protection for my alcohol supply alone. Grunt.
