Why I HATE Talking About Auto Deductibles – Part II

I take a lot of pride in building a personal auto policy for my insureds.  I don’t sell on price, I don’t sell on gimmicks, gifts, or bonuses…

I sell on Protection and Proactive Service. That’s all that I, as an insurance salesman, can control.  When the worst happens the best that I can do is to make sure you have insurance coverage in place that will “Financially” (very important to understand, financially) protect you and your family.

To do this, when I meet with a prospective client, I focus on three features of the Auto policy:

Part I: At-Fault Liability Limit

PartII: No-Fault (Personal Injury Protection in NYS)

Part III: Under-Insured / Un-Insured Motorist Limit.

I hate talking about deductibles.

Why I HATE talking about deductibles?

No-Fault (Personal Injury Protection in NYS)

Because in the event of a serious accident (god forbid any of you ever have one… seriously) your deductible is the LEAST important feature of your Auto policy.

Let’s say your driving down a standard Upstate New York suburban road in Winter. Now Picture standard Upstate NY Winter weather windy, cold, wet and your driving at a conservative 40 mph because you are a responsible adult.  Almost home, you maneuver a bend in the road you’ve driven a thousand times when suddenly start to slide on black ice.  In what only feels like heartbeat later you wake up in a hospital bed to realize you very serious injuries to left side of your body from the tree that hit your driver’s side door at 40 mph.

These types of accidents are very common in Upstate.  We have a lot trees and a lot of ice, making this type of accident a very realistic possibility in your world.

So, when you wake in the hospital seriously banged up from a car accident, are you worried about the deductible you have to pay for your Collision coverage or are you worried about paying hospital bills and recouping lost wages from time missed at work?

In New York State your Personal Injury Protection (PIP)  coverage pays for medical expenses and lost wages from a car accident for every person in your car.  Currently this coverage is mandatory at $50,000 per person, per accident.  However, PIP can be maxed out at $150,000 per person, per accident.  If you add in Other Basic Economic Loss or OBEL coverage you can have a total of $175,000 in No-Fault coverage per person, per accident.

When the WORST happens, who gives a crap about the cost difference between $250, $500 or $1,000 deductible… What you better be damn sure of is your No-Fault benefits are maxed out at $175,000.

Thank you,

Ryan H.
