Why I HATE Talking About Auto Deductibles – Part I

I take a lot of pride in building a personal auto policy for my insureds.  I don’t sell on price, I don’t sell on gimmicks, gifts, or bonuses…

I sell on Protection and Proactive Service. That’s all that I, as an insurance salesman, can control.  When the worst happens the best that I can do is to make sure you have insurance coverage in place that will “Financially” (very important to understand, financially) protect you and your family.

To do this, when I meet with a prospective client, I focus on three features of the Auto policy:

Part I: At-Fault Liability Limit

Part II: No-Fault (Personal Injury Protection in NYS)

Part III: Under-Insured / Un-Insured Motorist Limit.

I hate talking about deductibles.

Why I HATE talking about deductibles?

At-Fault Liability

Because in the event of a serious accident (god forbid any of you ever have one… seriously) your deductible is the LEAST important feature of your Auto policy.

Let’s say your driving down Madison Avenue near Lark Street in Albany, New York.  There is a lot of foot traffic in this area of the city and the intersection can be quite hectic.  You look down for a split second to change the radio station and WHAM you smear a 28 year-old lawyer meeting some colleagues for a drink. She dies…

What are you going to do? The WORST just happened to you…

Flash two weeks later.  You are now being sued by this young woman’s husband for her medical expense, funeral/burial expense, and 20 years worth of income she would have brought to her young family.  You are screwed…

Your deductible isn’t going to do CRAP for you now…

Skimping on Liability coverage so you could have that $250 collision deductible just ruined your life…

Your At-Fault Liability is a coverage designed to protect you when the WORST happens.  Your Comprehensive and Collision coverage is small potatoes compared to the loss you can sustain if you kill someone.  Don’t think it can’t happen to you.  It happens everyday to people just like you.  When you discuss Auto Insurance with your Insurance Professional your discussion should focus on “How much Liability can I get?” Not “How low of a Comp deductible can I afford?”

Making “The Right” decision, to maximize your At-Fault Liability could save you and your family’s life some day.
