You Need an Independent Agent
Guest Contributor - Jamie Deapo, Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York (IIABNY)
“Recently a number of insurance companies have decided to market their product primarily around price. “Fifteen minutes could save you 15%” and programs like Name Your Price® convey an irresponsible message that ultimately could hurt the insurance buying public.
While price and affordability are factors in buying insurance the primary purpose in buying coverage is protection. Consumers buy protection against the possibility they will have an accident and need to defend themselves in court and/or pay damages to another party. They also receive benefits in the form of no-fault coverage and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
Most consumers never envision themselves being involved in a serious accident however the possibility of it happening is very real. Recently we’ve seen a number of auto accidents involving drivers heading the wrong way on a highway injuring or killing innocent people. There are also a number of irresponsible drivers out there who will drive while intoxicated or have little or no insurance coverage. With the current economic climate some folks have to reduce their coverage and others are risking operating their vehicle with no insurance coverage.
Cell phone conversations and texting while driving are becoming a serious factor in the number of auto accidents that occur. We all know the law requires hands free devices for using cell phones and that texting while driving is against the law in a number of places in New York. Unfortunately, we also all know and have seen those individuals who violate the law and use their cell phones without a hands free device and also text while driving.
The possibility of being involved in a serious accident is real. Consumers should be concerned that they have protection for themselves and their families for any serious loss they might be held responsible for. They don’t want to lose some or all of their assets in the event of an auto accident. They also want to make sure there is adequate coverage available to take care of any of their family members injured in an accident. They don’t want to find out after an accident that there is not enough insurance coverage to properly care for and rehabilitate an injured family member.
If you are concerned with having adequate protection at a competitive price than you should explore doing business with an independent agent. They offer their clients customized coverage, from a choice of insurance companies, backed by professional advice and service. They not only make sure you have the opportunity to purchase the correct coverage to meet your needs but they also make sure when there is a claim that you receive fast and fair claims service. Insurance policies are confusing to read and not very user friendly. Your independent agent is well versed in what is and isn’t covered and can advocate on your behalf when there is a claim.
