In a recent article by BusinessInsurance.com, results from the Rand Health Insurance Experiment show that an increase in Health Benefits leads to an increase in Body Mass Index.  From the article, “The researchers concluded that there is strong evidence that being insured increases body mass index and obesity, and that more generous insurance coverage could exacerbate the situation.”

This is one theme that both Democrats and Republicans agree on, that any Health Reform needs to focus on prevention.  In this article on Medical News Today, Kaiser Health News reports that “If there is one thing that both parties can agree on in the health overhaul debate, it’s the need to build a health system that promotes prevention rather than just manages disease.” The article further goes on to explain that:

“Proposals currently being debated in Congress would require “Medicare and private health insurers to fully cover preventive services such as checkups and screening tests for cancer without any patient co-payments or deductibles.” President Obama maintains that “prevention measures can save lives and limit health spending,” and such a provision is “one of the eight consumer protections he wants in any health overhaul legislation.” But the health insurance industry is balking, saying “such a provision would lead to higher premiums and hamper insurers’ flexibility to design plans”

It seems that Lawmakers are starting to realize that some burden for Health Care Reform is going to fall on consumers.  Americans cannot have the greatest Health Care in the world AND not pay anything for it.  Sacrifices are going to have to be made to reach Universal Health Care.  What those sacrifices are going to be, at this point, is still unclear.
