Many business owners view workers comp insurance as a headache. The policies are expensive, auditable, and highly regulated. However, according to Gregory P. Guy of the University of Iowa, although excessively intricate workers comp law remains a crucial component to the American work environment.
Guy explains in his Brief History of Workers Compensation that dispite drawbacks there are three critical benefits of workers comp which include: The employer gets tort relief. The employee gets a relatively quick, equitable, and predictable no-fault compensation scheme. The system carries an intrinsic incentive toward rehabilitation of the injured worker.
Once a week I have a client in my office who will inquire about the necessity of workers comp for their business. The frustration with workers comp often stems from the very simple fact that employers have a hard time envisioning situations that have not taken place. On a recent blog post by Roberto Ceniceros from Businessinsurance.com he outlines two rather obscure examples of workers comp claims. Though many employers will never have to deal with situations such as these the blog shows that claims can happen any time, and in most cases happen unexpectedly.
For employers, there is no way to completely safeguard your organization against a workers comp claim. The best protection available for the organization’s viability is to sit down with your insurance professional and discuss all the facets of your business. Together you can create a workers comp program that will properly protect both the business and your employees.
